PILLARS – The Provincial Capitol Building of Leyte

On several occasions, I had the chance to visit the Provincial Capitol Building of Leyte in Tacloban. The visits were part of my previous company’s Information Education and Communication activities for our seismic survey program in the Camotes sea. The building is located at the corner of Sen. Enage Street and Magsaysay Boulevard

Built in 1907, the building is a stunning neoclassical architecture typical of American-era government edifices and played a significant part of Philippine history when it became the seat of Philippine Commonwealth Government  for a brief period from October 23, 1944 to February 27, 1945. On its steps, Sergio Osmena was sworn into office as the President of the Commonwealth by Gen. Douglas MacArthur.

The building features two bas-relief depicting the First Christian Mass held in the island of Limasawa and the historical landing of Gen. Douglas MacArthur on Red Beach, Palo Leyte.
